Tell Elon and Donald to stop stealing from cancer patients.

You probably saw the news from Friday night:

The Trump administration is cutting billions of dollars in biomedical research funding, alarming academic leaders who said it would imperil their universities and medical centers and drawing swift rebukes from Democrats who predicted dire consequences for scientific research.

This assault on America’s scientific leadership is just one of the 11 or so little coups that Elonald has going on right now. But this one has proven to be an immediate vulnerability. This is because it’s impossible to ignore how these decimating cuts would cause “lasting damage to public health, sink share prices of biotech and pharmaceutical companies, and cede the competition for scientific leadership to China.”

Obviously, MAGA’s Two Daddies are okay with that decimation as long as they feel it’s harming their perceived enemies. All they care about is their egos. But even those are under assault due to this announcement.

A diehard MAGA Senator from Alabama is yelping about the proposed cuts.

And so is Elon, kinda:

Democrats came out quick with a good statement, including:

“Once again, President Trump and Elon Musk are acting in direct violation of the law. In this case, they are causing irreparable damage to ongoing research to develop cures and treatments for cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, ALS, Diabetes, Mental Health disorders, opioid abuse, genetic diseases, rare diseases, and other diseases and conditions affecting American families,” said Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro. “The Trump Administration is attempting to steal critical funds promised to scientific research institutions funded by the NIH, despite an explicit legal prohibition against this action.”

And that has to be just the beginning of the pushback on this. The muscles we build honing these attacks will help us save Medicaid.

These messages must be pushed into every possible media—from quick TikToks to hours-long podcasts—with lists of the exact programs being cut and from which institutions.

Good news because Democrats love lists!

Generally, we think lists of policies or cuts are the secret to out-maneuvering Republicans. That’s almost always wrong. Because in this case, the lists matter, as they personalize the attacks. We all know someone who has benefited from University care or research. These cuts brutalize key institutions in key swing states like Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Michigan. However, they also extend out to damage the economies of almost every state, even Alabama.

But I beg of you, please don’t just list. As I explained in Lakoff and Duran’s FrameLab, we must frame our fight. Then we must repeat the frame until it becomes awkward and Republicans begin to squeal about our incivility. That’s when we know it’s starting to work. (Think about the “Weird” thing.)

This is theft. The wealthiest men ever to live are looting the sick.

The Robber Barons of the Gilded Age were miserable pigs who hogged up everything around them to stack up their fortunes. But their philanthropy built cities and intellectual infrastructure that’s still helping us fight cancer to this day. Elon and his broligargh buddies are turning off the light for the most desperate among us—all so he can keep sucking up government subsidies and tax breaks and betraying the basics of American freedom with his cyber attack on the Constitution.

Even he’s embarrassed by what he’s doing, as he should be.

Let’s not let that go to waste.
